'See-through' tanks are coming: Military tech lets soldiers plot enemy routes while remaining behind heavily armoured walls

  • (1888PressRelease) July 20, 2016 - In order to protect troops on the battlefield, vehicles need to be heavily armoured, but this has led to a trade off in visibility. But BattleView 360, developed by BAE Systems, aims to get around the issue by incorporating data feeds from cameras and sensors and streaming the information to a display for the soldier. The technology is a progression of that already being tested by fighter pilots, such as the F-35 jet's helmet which incorporates 360 video, navigation and weapons systems data. BAE claim the system can help with decision-making in the field and help soldiers recognise friend from foe. The heads up display can incorporate a vehicle's camera feeds, giving troops a 360 view of their surroundings and effectively enabling them to see through the walls of the vehicle. But it can also overlay map and sensor data from other vehicles and intelligence sources, to track movements of enemy units in the area.

Against this backdrop, SMi is proud to announce that Mr Dan Lindell, Platform Manager, Combat Vehicles at BAE Systems Hägglunds will be providing a case study on the BattleView 360 tool and potential plans for its integration within the CV90 programme at the highly anticipated Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability 2016 conference. His presentation, titled 'Increasing Armoured Vehicle Survivability Through Enhanced Situational Awareness - Effectively Enhancing Augmented Reality', will be taking place at 15:30 on Day One and will address the following key points:
An overview of the rationale behind BAE Hagglunds Battle View 360 system: How can augmented reality enhance situational awareness?
    • Survivability advantages delivered:
    1. Blue force tracking
    2. Red force tracking
    3. Target acquisition
    • Challenges to consider such as system integration and human factors
    • Potential plans for integration within CV90 and feedback from trials and development

SMi's Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability 2016 conference will provide unrivalled insight into what leading land forces and their selected OEMs are doing to enhance the safety and protection of mechanised personnel. Through an exploration of the latest technology and concepts of operation for enhanced survivability, this unique event focuses on the collaboration between military and industry, inviting not only the programme managers and operational commanders at the forefront of armoured vehicle procurement and use, but also, the lead engineers, chief scientists and technical directors from the vehicle manufacturers themselves, who create the platforms and technologies at the heart of armoured vehicle protection.
