  • (1888PressRelease) October 14, 2012 - October 12, New Delhi: National development has a special role in the federal polity. Keeping this notion in mind, Shri Arun Jaitley, Honorable Member of Parliament spoke to a packed audience of eager students and teachers today evening, engaging and enthralling them with facts and figures, insightful view points and humorous anecdotes in the 'JIMS Eminent Leader Lecture' organized at Sai International Auditorium.

Speaking at a function in the national capital, Shri Arun Jaitley, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, endorsed the Supreme Court verdict on the transfer of natural resources to private individuals. Shri Jaitley argued that the fall in the level of personal integrity among the people who occupied positions of political power ruled out any room for discretion in such a process. He observed that in such an environment when you allow discretion on case to case basis, you you make the entire process suitcase to suitcase basis. He argued that where the natural resources were meant for commercial exploitation the transfer should be through a transparent process of bidding, based on market valuation. Shri Jaitley decried the lack of democratic mechanisms within many political parties which led to political sycophancy and feudal mindsets of eulogizing certain families. Shri Jaitley cautioned against the present atmosphere of cynicism in the political atmosphere on account of people in political power not measuring up to the standards of integrity demanded by such positions.

Adding to Mr Jaitley's statement, Mr Amit Gupta, JIMS Chairman said that accountability requires the participation of strong, efficient and capable state institutions, civil society organizations, the media and the entire citizenry. In the pursuit of national development goal, we must treat accountability and good governance as challenges along the way. Overcoming these challenges must be the pre-occupation of every Indian'.
