  • (1888PressRelease) July 07, 2016 - "A Place by the Sea" by Simon Clayton, About the Book: Carter Talbot has served Her Majesty's Government for all his adult life. He needs a rest.

Nearly forty years in the Army and the FCO have taken him around the World's trouble spots, and into loads of trouble. His character and training have seen him through the worst of times. Now, it's time to share his stories. He takes a pen name and hides away in the Outer Hebrides to write his memoirs.

His well-deserved retirement is shattered when an unexpected element of the past catches up with him, leading into a whirlpool of long dormant emotions. A personal history of war, lost love and regret, looms large as he tries to come to terms with the different demands aimed in his direction, and in defending his place by the sea.

In Simon Clayton's second novel, he weaves together themes including genocide, heartbreak, family conflict, soldiering and revenge, through the looking glass of Talbot's experience and the people in his life.

    About the Author:
After starting work at sixteen in Lloyd's of London, Simon Clayton has spent the last forty-one years working in the insurance industry in Europe and East Africa. During that time he was married for twenty-seven years, has a grown up British son, a young African one, and his fiancée delivered identical twin boys in December 2015. He got all his professional qualifications later in life and has been lucky enough to be successful in his field, holding a succession of CEO positions and directorships in the industry. He is British and is currently living and working in Kenya. He is a bad golfer, a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur, and an avid fan of good single malt whisky. Simon's first novel, Less Than One a Year, was published in March 2014.

Make this your next Kindle purchase. Quite long, but I read it cover to cover in about 36 hours, that is between spells working at my office. I read a lot and it is finding a new author or series that you always look for. The story was gripping, the characters for the most part were interesting and real, the background on Harris contrasted remarkably with the African part of the story....quite ambitious that, I thought....I hope Mr Clayton provides us with more of the same in the not too distant future.

Absolutely loved it - a gripping read. It was hard to put down as I needed to know was going to happen next, The book made me feel I was actually on the Scottish Island and also brought back memories of visits to Kenya. The story has something for everyone - adventure, mystery, romance and a touch of humour. This would make a real cracking film. Watch out James Bond!
