NTPC and BPDP sign Joint Venture Agreement to set up coal based power project in Bangladesh

NTPC Limited and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDP), the premiere power utility of Bangladesh.


(1888PressRelease) February 03, 2012 - NTPC Limited and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDP), the premiere power utility of Bangladesh, wholly owned by Govt. of Bangladesh, signed a Joint Venture Agreement in Dhaka on 29th January, 2012 for setting up coal based Power project(s) in Bangladesh with equal (50:50) equity participation on Build, Own and Operate basis.. The Project shall be a landmark in bilateral economic cooperation between India and Bangladesh.

The Joint Venture Agreement was signed by Shri Arup Roy Choudhury, CMD, NTPC and ASM Alamgir Kabir, Chairman BPDP. Dignitaries present from Bangladesh side included Mr. A. Muhit, Minister of Finance, Dr. Mashiur Rahman, Advisor (Economic) to PM, Dr. Taufiq Ellahi Chaudhury, Adv. (Power) to PM, Md. Enamul Haq, Minister of State for Power, Mr. Tariq Karim, High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Secretary (Power Division). From Indian side Shri. P. Uma Shankar, Secretary (Power), Mr. Sanjay Bhattacharya, Acting Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Shri. Inderjit Kapoor, Director (Comml.), Mr. A K Gupta, GM (BD) and Mr. U K Bhattacharya, DGM (BD) of NTPC were present.

A site at Bagerhat district (Khulna Division) of Bangladesh has been identified for developing a 1320MW (2X660MW) imported coal based power project with super critical technology. Detailed Feasibility Report for the Project has been prepared. Entire power generated by the Power project shall be supplied to BPDB, to meet growing requirements of Bangladesh.
