Classic British styled accessories retailer Moodys Worldwide commented today on reports that UK high street stores are vastly overcharging their customers for fashion.
(1888PressRelease) April 08, 2011 - High street chains can charge as much as 45% more for clothing and accessories compared to their stores in other European countries.
Thisismoney.co.uk published research focused on fifteen items available from one leading high street fashion chain. Compared to the chain's Spanish stores, each item was found to retail at between 18 to 45% more in the UK. Other retailers with stores in both the USA and UK have been found to charge UK customers as much as 25% more than their American counterparts. There have even been cases reported in the Daily Mail where a household name designer brand was charging 50% more for identical products purchased in their UK branches compared to the US. The team at Moody's were quick to stress their online collections offer genuine value for money:
"The customer has every right to expect equal treatment and of course our prices obviously won't vary according to where they're buying from. The only difference is our delivery rates are free in the UK but we have to make a small charge to ship to Europe and the rest of the World. Our pricing reflects exceptionally good value for money because we never cut corners to save on costs. Our menswear range features only British silk. We have classic British designs and contemporary city styling for handkerchiefs, ties, bow ties, scarves and cummerbunds. You can wear our pieces with your working wardrobe; at a wedding; at a formal gala; or on a Sunday with your favourite coat. All in all, they represent a reliable investment - a well tailored suit always demands high quality accessories to complete the look".
The trend for inflated prices affects both designer and regular high street chains. Accessories are not immune to the problem. Despite media exposes of the practice, it is easy to find identical women's scarves on sale with well known high street store s today in Spain at well under their UK price. Menswear is also still often more expensive. Retailers argue higher prices are pegged to the local costs of their overheads.
"Again, our online collection avoids all these problems and the quality equals exceptional value for money. Each piece in our collection will last far longer than just one fashion season. We start with the raw materials - our silk is a good example. It's produced in England by 10th generation silk weaving artisans. We founded Moodys to expressly create a very unique shopping experience. We wanted to provide convenience alongside production higher standards; and very often our pieces are hand finished. We are very firmly against the trend of having to pay over the odds for a mass produced product that people are buying for less in other places".
