  • Baton Rouge, LA (1888PressRelease) September 03, 2010 - Emily Smith and Fusion Health and Fitness in Prairieville, LA have taken the lead in the fight against hunger in Ascension Parish by organizing the ONE CAN Make a Difference Charity Bike Ride which will take place at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 9th. Come support this effort and celebrate the arrival of cooler Fall weather with a great day of cycling and fun. The full entry fee of $25 per rider will go towards purchasing food for the Fellowship Center in Gonzales. Socially minded children who also want to make a difference are encouraged to participate in the ride in exchange for a donation of 10 cans of non-perishable food items each. Pit stops are located along the route and will offer jambalaya and other Louisiana foods for all registered riders.

Organizer, Emily Smith, was inspired when she saw a truck in a church parking lot displaying a sign that said "free food." Cars were lined up for over a mile and it was a simple as driving up and receiving food. No questions asked and nothing required! "It was as if God inspired me right at that moment to do something to help people in need," Emily said. "It was truly a divine moment for me." Overwhelmed by the realization that a relatively well-to-do community like Ascension Parish had people in need, Emily was spurred to action. Seeing the relief in peoples' eyes as they were being handed food made Emily realize that every can of food means something. One Can Charity Bike Ride is simply taking that one can of food and that one person to make a difference in the community. The ONE CAN Bike Ride will assist those who are disabled, elderly, or experiencing financial hardships in Gonzales, LA and surrounding area.

Additional non-perishable food is urgently needed. Riders who donate food will receive one prize drawing ticket for every 10 cans of food donated on ride day. Many ONE CAN sponsors and local businesses have contributed prizes which will be awarded to riders at the end of the event. For anyone with an interest in Louisiana's history along the River Road, Bocage Plantation's donation of the chance to win a one night stay at one of the nation's most impressive Greek revival mansions is sure to cause excitement! The lucky winner will enjoy a glimpse into a bygone lifestyle that few ever experience. Guests are treated to a personal tour of the mansion, hors d'oeuvres and wine are enjoyed in the handsome double parlors, and after a day of enjoying area attractions, guests are shown to their rooms, all of which boast impressive antiques and luxurious bathrooms. A stay at Bocage culminates the next morning with a gourmet breakfast cooked to order.

Riding isn't the only way to participate. Volunteers are needed to provide assistance and sponsorship opportunities are available.
