"Vivid and happy memories of my life on Crete from 2007 until 2013 inspired me to write about the most memorable of them with a view to sharing them with others. My husband, Frank, and I lived in a beautiful house in the countryside halfway up a hill on the edge of a village, not far from a small idyllic seaside resort. Living our dream as homeowners on the Greek island was an amazing experience, but also an unbelievable challenge. Through reading my story I hope that you will be touched by my passion for Crete and fondness for the Greek islanders.
'The Land of Surprises' looks at how western Europeans become enchanted by Crete and what makes many of them experience a "magnetic force", making them want to return again and again or even settle there. It focuses on the undeniable beauty of the landscape and the marvellous intensity of light, which my beautiful photographs clearly show. Nobody on the island suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder!
For readers to be able to understand how difficult and challenging life on a Greek island is for western Europeans, I found it necessary to write about the unpleasant aspects of my life there as well as the pleasant ones. In order to protect the identities of those Greeks and expatriates who added spice to my story, I gave them all pseudonyms; and for the same reason no town or village written about was named."
