  • (1888PressRelease) August 16, 2012 - Peekskill, NY - One of the largest commercial laundry services in the northeast is pulling away from its competition in two key areas: sustainability and efficiency. White Plains Linen has consolidated its current facilities, which includes two reconstructed buildings and 30,000 square feet of new construction. This new 100,000 square foot, one of a kind "green" facility will make use of newly innovative technology and automation that could set the tone for the industry.

The six million dollar investment in the building and equipment will enable White Plains Linen to drastically reduce its energy usage by 25% immediately. By the end of 2013, the company will continue this trend with a further 70% reduction in its carbon footprint after converting the majority of gas burning equipment to steam heat. This steam heat will be purchased from an outside source that converts municipal waste to energy.

Design for the cutting edge facility began in 2009 in an effort to create a new kind of plant that reduces the company's environmental footprint; no small task for a large industrial laundry service. To accomplish this goal, White Plains Linen has installed equipment to reclaim heat from waste water. A system was designed to cut water usage up to 60% by reusing clean rinse water and collecting and filtering an estimated 2.5 million gallons of rainwater per year. The company has also implemented a complex system of conveyers and monorails to streamline its operations.

"When planning the new facility, our goal was to correct all the inefficiencies of the past and to make our operations sustainable for decades to come," said Leonard Labonia, Vice President of Operations, "Our new designs optimize every BTU and gallon of water. Automation and labor savings was the prime motivator for the project but energy costs have always been the wild card. When trying to predict laundering costs for our customers the energy savings and green aspects of the new facility have taken on a life of its own."

White Plains Linen is currently transitioning out of the old facility and expects the new one to be in complete operation by the end of this month. The Peekskill Industrial Development Association (IDA) has helped champion White Plains Linen's efforts by providing tax and other considerations to give the new facility a home in its city. Running at full capacity, the company's innovative plant operation will turn out one million pounds of restaurant linens per week.
