Welbeck Storm to Victory in Wasps' Touch Sevens Tournament

  • (1888PressRelease) September 01, 2011 - Advisers from the financial services side of Welbeck Group took on the might of the London Wasps in a touch rugby tournament last week and won! Nick Marshall, Patrick Murphy, Christopher James and Peter Groves made significant contributions to the Welbeck team to help raise funds for Touraid and Wasps players' Richard Birkett and John Harte's testimonials.

    10 teams took part including law firm Freshfields, Vanilla Pod, Aviva, Klas International, EMC, Welbeck Group and London Wasps.

    Wasps' legends Joe Worsley and Dominic Waldouck showed their support and the event was jam packed with key industry professional and rugby stars. Each team included a mix of players of all abilities as well as some former Wasp players. Past and present stars such as Kenny Logan, Peter Scrivener, Chris Bell, Buster White, Ben Gotting Nick Robinson, Riki Flutey and Paul Turner helped manage each team.

    England and Wasps winger Tom Varndell managed the Welbeck team, proving a huge success as Welbeck won all seven matches and stormed to victory in the tournament.

    A mixture of team work and competitive spirit, a key part of the Welbeck culture, allowed Welbeck to excel and win the Cup. In total Welbeck Group helped to raise £4,000 for the chosen charity, Touraid, which raises money to support families coping with premature births.

    Nick Marshall, one of the Welbeck team said of the day, "it was a fantastic day, great fun, a superb opportunity to play with world class rugby players and raise some money for a good cause. We are chuffed to have won."

    Wasps star, Richard Birkett, who helped organise the day as part of his testimonial said, "Touch rugby is growing and gives an opportunity for supporters to play with professional players. It is a bit of fun to launch my testimonial but the competitive juices flowed throughout and I'd like to congratulate Welbeck for their deserved victory and thank them for their support."
