(1888PressRelease) June 13, 2013 - (Clackamas, OR) An upcoming webinar by the Institute for Professional Care Education (IPCed) will show Colorado caregivers how to get dementia care training online that meets the requirements of Leaders in Dementia Care, a recognition program developed by the Alzheimer's Association of Colorado to acknowledge the state's best-trained dementia caregivers.

The webinar, scheduled for Tuesday, June 25 at 1:00 p.m. (MDT) (register at https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/299676273), will demonstrate how Colorado caregivers can get dementia care training online through the IPCed Dementia Care Specialist Certificate program, which provides eight hours of dementia education that meets all requirements of the Alzheimer's Association of Colorado Leaders In Dementia Care recognition.

IPCed's Dementia Care Specialist Certificate program is open to in-home care, assisted living, retirement communities, nursing homes, hospices, hospitals, memory care units and other individuals and other organizations caring for persons with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The training covers four major topics: understanding dementia and Alzheimer's disease; communications techniques; meaningful interactions and reducing agitation.

The Leaders in Dementia Care Program was created by the Alzheimer's Association of Colorado as a pro-active solution to providing better care for the growing population of Alzheimer's patients. IPCed is an approved online training provider and its classes can be accessed anytime, anywhere by caregivers.

"Being able to complete training online gives caregivers and organizations an affordable option to easily meet the Alzheimer's Association Leader in Dementia Care stipulation that 75 percent of your staff must be trained," Brokaw added. Following completion of the IPCed Dementia Care Specialist training, caregiving organizations can apply to the Alzheimer's Association of Colorado for recognition as a Leader in Dementia Care. Organizations chosen for recognition will be acknowledged on referral lists provided to families by the Association and on the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment website. This program, however, is not an endorsement.

The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is increasing both nationally and in Colorado. By 2050, the number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease is projected to exceed 13 million. More than 110,000 Coloradans are projected to have Alzheimer's disease in 2025, compared to 72,000 in 2011. Alzheimer's disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S. Further, it is estimated that 70 percent of nursing home residents have some degree of cognitive impairment.
