  • (1888PressRelease) September 15, 2015 - Waiting in the Wings began harmless enough as an outlet for the author when her husband ended up on the operation table for emergency surgery because of a hernia. While waiting to hear from the surgeon, Nicole Kiefer couldn't help herself and wonder, "What happens when something goes wrong, what if he dies?" Morbid maybe, but also realistic because there are always risks, and they are even greater when there isn't much time to prepare.

When returning home several hours later, relieved to know that her husband would not only survive but fully recover the questions and fears had already manifested into the beginning of a story.

While writing what was originally planned as a short story, one thought after another came up, and suddenly there was a whole lot more going on.

Waiting in the Wings became a story not of her husband surviving but a woman surviving twenty years of marriage that had taken a toll on her. "Nothing is real" Nicole Kiefer said when asked if the story is related to her. "I got the idea while watching a documentary on mental abuse on TV, just as I started writing Waiting in the Wings. Then I combined it with my own experiences or rather life challenges."

Like the lead female character, Nicole Kiefer is dyslexic and has Fibromyalgia which caused her to become unable to work as a cook in 2013 and turned her back to a writing career that began in Germany several years earlier. During her time in school back in Germany where she was born and grew up, she was bullied and knows how it feels to be told that she was stupid, useless and unable to archive anything in life. This helped her to relate to the mental abuse she used in her story.

Yet as any romance novel this one needed a hero and a happy end. "No romance novel should end with a tragedy. If only real life was that easy to have a happy ending. There are a lot of woman out there stuck in a marriage that makes them feel bad about themselves. They all deserve to be loved."

With the goal in mind to give those woman especially hope that there might be a better time around the corner, and those with disabilities that there is always a way to go on, she wrote Sara's and Benjamin's story.

She tells of the sacrifice, the pain and the loss during Sara's twenty years of marriage, how she is suddenly free when her husband dies. Yet as free as she might be, the damage done isn't simply forgotten or reversed. And when she realizes that sharing her secret dreams and hopes with her first love and still best friend Benjamin, gave him the impression they could be together again, she panics. Believing herself incapable of ever loving or trusting again, she severs all ties to him.

Only Benjamin isn't that easily deterred. It was his biggest mistake to have let Lisa walk out of his life, but he had accepted that she had married, and later that she didn't want to leave her husband no matter how miserable she was. Now he want's nothing more than to right the wrong and be with her again. Going to great lengths to archive that he gives up his life and moves to the town Sara life, not just the same town, but the same apartment building.

When Sara finds out, her life becomes complicated. Soon she has to admit to herself that she still loves him, but is too scared of those feelings to act on them.

Yet when a stalker makes himself known, and threatens her with kidnapping, rape and death, Benjamin is the only person she can turn to for support. Now there is not just danger to her locked away heart, but also to her life.
