  • Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) July 17, 2013 - VMZINC® -US and Umicore Building Products, USA Inc. (http://www.vmzinc-us.com/), a leading specialist in innovative zinc products manufactured and sold by the Building Products Unit of Umicore, has announced that the American Institute of Architects (AIA) NC Center for Architecture and Design has received the Judges Award from Metal Architecture's 2013 Metal Architecture Design Awards. This prestigious award recognizes design excellence in projects completed during 2011 or 2012 in nine categories of metal architecture, including metal buildings, metal roofing and sustainable design. The winning AIA NC Center for Architecture and Design features a 20,000-square-foot double-lock, standing seam roof composed of material donated complimentary from VMZINC.

VMZINC's North American headquarters, which is based in Raleigh, provided its PIGMENTO Red material, which should last for an extended period of time, for use in the construction of the facility's newly designed walls as well as the roof. This donation stands as the largest donation of zinc in North America. VMZINC supported the project in this fashion because it promotes environmentally responsible construction and design and aligns with the company's opposition to greenwashing (the practice of making false claims that a good or service is ecologically beneficial).

Frank Harmon, FAIA, of Frank Harmon Architect PA designed the Raleigh-based facility, which serves as AIA NC's state headquarters and was completed in December 2011. Harmon and Irvin Pearce, president of AIA North Carolina, saw the project as an opportunity to exemplify environmentally friendly construction and support the institute's core values of environmental consciousness in architectural design and construction. As a role model for healthy urbanism for AIA NC chapter members as well as future development in downtown Raleigh and its surrounding communities, the building stands as a flagship for green architecture in North Carolina that demonstrates and encourages aesthetically-pleasing design coupled with environmental integrity.

The Metal Architecture Design Awards take into account both the overall design of each project and the innovative use of metal materials. Within each awards category, contestants are judged on their ability to meet criteria standards in overall appearance, significance of metal to the overall project appearance, innovativeness of material use, significance of metal to achieving project objectives and the quality of accompanying photography.
