  • Houston, TX (1888PressRelease) September 27, 2017 - League City, Texas – Hurricane Harvey displaced many residents of the greater Houston Area but not stranger than the residents of Challenger 7 Learning Center West NASA Boulevard in Webster.

Safari Veterinary Care Centers has been a fixture on Marina Bay Drive for 33 years. With veterinarians board certified in medicine and surgery of small animals, birds, and exotics, the facility has seen its share of strange critters, but some recent boarders definitely rank among the most unique.

The wild creatures of The Learning Center are used in programs to educate children on wildlife, providing up-close introductions to various members of the animal kingdom. Since the animals are kept in a glass and open-air wire cages, David Matthews, Program Director at The Center, was naturally concerned when the waters kept rising. A trip over to check on his ward quickly proved they were in need of evacuation to higher, dryer ground. Enter Safari Veterinary Care Centers.

Director Matthews and Dr. Steven Garner, DVM and Chief of Staff at Safari Veterinary Care Centers, have known each other since 2013 when Director Matthews asked Dr. Garner to provide veterinary care for the education center. Safari Has been a fixture, Director Matthews and other Center volunteers loaded up each and every one of the hedgehogs, scorpions, skinks, birds, bearded dragons, tortoises, and yes, even giant roaches, and brought them to Safari Veterinary Care Centers on Marina Bay Drive in League City, where they could make a new home till theirs could be replaced..

Safari Employees helped the center staff and volunteers prepare the puppy daycare area for the new arrivals. Now Jelly Bean (a sun conure) and friends get to watch Safari patients receive their physical therapy from the comfort of their new home.

Safari is no stranger to exotic animals. Since Safari was founded in 1984 it has seen a host of animals from tigers and emus to tiny finches and even a hermit crab. Dr. Garner is board certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Companion Animal Practice (1992; re-certified in 2002 and 2012.) Safari Veterinary Care Centers mantra is “Diagnosis Before we treat” using advanced diagnostic, surgical, and rehabilitative tools combined with the latest medical advancements such as stem cell therapy to treat pets from all over Houston. Patients have traveled from all over North America to come to Safari for groundbreaking stem cell treatments.
