  • (1888PressRelease) September 16, 2010 - Located in the Loire Valley, VEGEPOLYS is an innovation cluster which brings together companies involved in plant growing with a range of partner organisations. It is recognised worldwide for its grouping of businesses, R&D centres and training establishments, and has been designated a world-class competitiveness cluster by the French Government.

The three innovative projects VEGEPOLYS has been promoting are Plantinov'Ser, Genêts, and PEETAL.

The Plantinov'Ser project, led by the inter-professional technical centre for fruit and vegetables (CTIFL) in Carquefou, near Nantes, and the regional horticultural office (BHR) in Angers, aims to improve greenhouse energy-saving techniques in the horticultural and vegetable sectors. The Plantinov'Ser project develops energy-saving ducts, sources suitable vegetal material, and uses professional pilot sites to test relevant strategies as well as the equipment's technical ability and value.

The Genêts project is an international varietal innovation project which specialises in creating new varieties of broom. The project is supported by the Eurogeni business interest group (GIE Eurogeni) in Beaufort-en-Vallée, in western France. Broom is a plant that can grow in poor or depleted soil, as found in brownfield sites. Broom is, however, equally suitable for home gardening and flowerpots.

The PEETAL project (Environmental Protection and Alignment Tree Technology), which is led by Koppert, a private company based in Cavaillon (south-eastern France), aims to protect plane trees in Mediterranean countries from an insect known as the lace bug. Plane trees are highly effective in providing shade in countries which are exposed to substantial sunlight. The project's objective is to move away from the chemical treatment of plane trees, and over to the organic protection of the trees against this destructive insect that causes leaf decolouration and early defoliation.
