US Withdrawal Timetable for Fifth Edition of UL 913

Top Quote The technical panel for Intrinsic Safe Apparatus used in hazardous locations has cancelled the timeline for manufacturers to comply with the 5th edition of UL 913. This decision was announced on August 1, 2017. End Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) September 05, 2017 - The timeline for compliance with the 5th edition of UL 913 by manufacturers of products used only for hazardous locations in the United States was indefinitely extended by the technical panel for Intrinsic Safe Apparatus for hazardous locations on August 1, 2017. Manufacturers are therefore allowed to submit their products for less strenuous testing.

This change was a result from feedback received from stakeholders across the board. There was an expressed desire to maintain an American National standard based on legacy requirements.

Manufacturers who plan to sell their products in the US and Europe can still test against the 8th edition of UL 913 - a harmonized standard that accords with ATEX standards. Both standards demonstrate the level of safety required for electronic products used in hazardous locations.
