  • (1888PressRelease) November 02, 2019 - The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has simplified and clarified its requirements for ENERGY STAR® certification for luminaires through the publishing of Luminaires Specification Version 2.2 on August 15, 2019. It is effective immediately.

The changes brought in by Version 2.2 mean that ENERGY STAR® certification now covers previously excluded products, such as luminaires with a personal device charging function. ENERGY STAR® luminaires certification is therefore available for things like desk lights that use a USB charger or AC outlet. External power supplies (EPS) that enable USB charging for these products must meet Level VI performance requirements or higher, under the International Efficiency Marking Protocol, following both US Department of Energy (DOE) and California Energy Commission (CEC) guidelines.

Luminaires Specification V2.2 also clarifies the EPA’s decision that luminaires incorporating integral battery packs intended solely for emergency operation are eligible for ENERGY STAR® certification. They do not need any additional requirements and, therefore, testing is conducted under normal conditions and to the normal voltage.

The new version also allows a product to be entered for appraisal for more than one type of luminaire certification standard at the same time. Previously, a product would need to be submitted twice if the manufacturer or supplier wished it to be included under two different product categories. The new EPA submission system is easier, and it decreases work burden and certification fees for manufacturers and suppliers.

Stakeholders should also be aware that the updated ENERGY STAR® specification now also accepts IES LM-79-08 and, to take into account the new photometric testing standard, ANSI/IES LM-79-19.

Current certifications are not affected by the publishing of Version 2.2 and so manufacturers of qualified products do not need to take any action in regard to this update.

ENERGY STAR® is a US Government-backed symbol for energy efficiency. It delivers cost-saving energy efficiency solutions that improve air quality and protect the climate and is followed by over 40 percent of the Fortune 500®. The system is recognized in Canada and the European Union and comes with a variety of incentives, including tax deductions.
