US CPSC Amends Mattress Flammability Standard

  • (1888PressRelease) August 13, 2021 - US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) amends the Federal Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads, 16 CFR part 1632, to mandate the use of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) revised Standard Reference Material cigarette, SRM 1196a, as the ignition source for testing. The change became necessary because the original ignition source cigarette (Standard Reference Material cigarette SRM 1196) specified in the standard is no longer available.

Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads, issued pursuant to the Flammable Fabrics Act (FFA), 15 U.S.C. 1191 et seq., includes a test to determine a mattress or mattress pad’s ignition resistance when exposed to a lit cigarette.

The change was made in a final rule issued on June 23, 2021. This follows an exhaustive pilot study conducted by the CPSC, after which it was concluded that “SRM 1196a is a comparable, safety neutral replacement for SRM 1196.”

The amendment came into effect on July 23, 2021. Stakeholders are advised to check that their products conform to the latest version of the Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads.
