  • (1888PressRelease) June 10, 2017 - On April 5, 2017 SGS held a furniture seminar for delegates from twenty companies in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The event brought together over fifty delegates, including well known retailers and Vietnamese importers and manufacturers. Attendees were updated on recent changes to European Union (EU) standards for outdoor furniture – the EN 581 series.

The seminar focused predominantly on EN 581-1:2017 – General safety requirement for outdoor furniture, including a look at ways in which the new standard was less stringent, for example in relation to finger entrapment. The presentation also considered the additional requirements introduced in this revision, for example, in relation to glass table-tops. Delegates were given an insight into the motivation behind the changes, revealing a need for greater clarity and closer harmony with the realities of the market.

In addition, the seminar also looked at the recently published changes to EN 581-3:2017- mechanical and safety requirement for tables, which has been updated to include references to standard EN 1730:2012 – Test method for tables, and reminded delegates of the changes made to EN 581-2:2015 – Mechanical and safety requirement for outdoor seating.

Delegates came away from the event with a better understanding of the requirements of -outdoor standards, many saying it would help their businesses with exports of outdoor furniture to the EU and to integrate updates into their new product development.
