Undersea Defence Technology Asia 2011

Top Quote The Only Undersea Focused Naval Event In Asia. End Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) July 26, 2011 - Singapore - While defence budgets in Europe and North America continue to contract, Asian naval procurement and defence budgets are continually rising as investments pour in for new equipment and technologies for the service. "The level of defence spending is unprecedented on all fronts, and Asia is clearly leading the way for where the focus will be for defence equipment sales in the years to come" said Amo Mostofi, General Manager - Asia at Clarion Events. Asian navies are now weighing options for buying new technologies and equipment for their underwater capabilities to overcome issues like developing a UUV capability, identifying the correct submarine type for procurement and integrating the latest undersea technologies for their specific requirements.

An estimated $30 billion will be spent on the acquisition of submarines, a clear demonstration that operating and maintaining an undersea fleet is no longer the domain of major world powers alone. The remaining monies will be spent on surface warships many of which will have ASW capabilities.

In all, navies in the Asia-Pacific are expected to spend US$108 billion in order to strengthen their submarine, surface combatant platforms and other maritime defence capabilities. This expenditure makes the region the number one global maritime defence market over the next decade, according to U.S. based naval consultancy AMI International. In total, regional navies are expected to acquire a total of 841 vessels by 2016.

A major player in the region will be Navantia. FABA, as the System Division of Navantia, and with more than 300 engineers, takes the responsibility as designer, developer and integrator of all the systems of the company's platforms. FABA is responsible for Combat Management Systems, Communications, Weapons Control, Platform Control, and their corresponding Through Life Support. From the Spanish Mine hunters, to the ASW of the F100 frigates and the new air independent propulsion Submarine, S-80. FABA designs the full scope including sonar, torpedo, missiles, and all remaining underwater weapons.

Navantia will be the Platinum sponsor at Undersea Defence Technology Asia on 30 November - 1 December, 2011. This is a content led conference that brings together the undersea defence community in Asia, featuring top regional naval speakers, who will be addressing the latest underwater requirements for Asian navies. Exhibitors in the conference include SAES who specialise in submarine electronics/acoustics and Bartington Instruments who design and manufacture high performance fluxgate magnetometers and magnetic susceptibility measuring instruments.

The UDT Asia conference will reflect the changing maritime trends here and will embrace a broad spectrum of undersea maritime security including changes in concepts of operations and the increased role for unmanned underwater vehicles. It also will look at the naval requirements and the technology that can fulfil these needs. Topics will range from ASW, UUVs, submarine procurement updates, future naval plans, MCM, countering asymmetric threats, and naval special operations forces. The countries involved include Singapore, Thailand, Australia, Cambodia, the United States and many more.
