  • (1888PressRelease) September 18, 2010 - Detroit, MI - Supporters came out Monday, September 13, 2010 for a sun- filled day of golf at Tam O'Shanter Country Club in West Bloomfield for the 7th annual Bernie Smilovitz Harvest Classic to benefit Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan (Gleaners). Celebrities from sports, news, music and television hit the links to raise funds for Gleaners and increase awareness of the agency's many hunger relief programs. The event raised $75,000, which will provide 225,000 meals for hungry families in the community.

    U of M Athletic Director David Brandon became THE celebrity of the day when he aced Hole #11, a 177- yard drive, winning the hole prize of $10,000, sponsored by First National Bank in Howell. According to US Hole In One Insurance, the odds of making a Par 3 hole-in-one are 1:12,500! Brandon surprised and elated the Gleaners staff when he pledged the winnings to the food bank. The donation will provide 30,000 meals to hungry families across southeastern Michigan.

    Teamed with one of Presenting Sponsor Epoch Restaurant Group's foursomes, Brandon took home more than bragging rights for the day's best shot. His team was the tournament's overall winner.

    After the tournament, players enjoyed a relaxing evening of food, drinks and conversation at Tam O'Shanter's back porch celebrating another successful year. "Dave Brandon winning the 10 grand, then giving it back, was the best," said WDIV- Local 4 sports anchor Bernie Smilovitz.

    "Gleaners is blessed to have so many generous supporters," said agency president DeWayne Wells. "Dave's surprise donation will go a long way to helping our mission." Nearly 2 million meals for those in need have been provided through Bernie's annual golf outings.
