  • Akron, OH (1888PressRelease) November 30, 2014 - Discovery Girls, the award-winning tween magazine created by girls, for girls, has been
voted the Best Column or Feature in the Nook/Barnes & Noble Readers' Choice Newsstand Awards.

The winning article was from Discovery Girls' "My Worst Day" series, which features real girls sharing true stories in their own words. During the 15 years since the magazine's launch, more than 80 girls have shared their stories about their personal struggles-and how they've overcome them.

"Whether it's about bullying, body image, fitting in, or learning disabilities, these stories are so important because they allow girls to feel safe enough to be vulnerable and honest about their experiences," says Catherine Lee, Discovery Girls founder and CEO. "The stories show girls they're not the alone-that other girls just like them are going through the same types of challenges they are. I'm constantly amazed by my brave readers and their willingness to share their stories and their insecurities so that other girls can benefit. That's what makes the 'My Worst Day' stories so compelling."

When the magazine launched 15 years ago, Lee was told by industry insiders that a magazine about ordinary girls could not possibly survive, especially if "real" girls were on the cover. "Everything had to be about celebrities," Lee says. "No one thought tween girls would be interested in reading real stories by ordinary girls."

"That's why this award is so important for girls, because it validates and empowers them. It shows them that their voices do matter-and that even adults are taking them seriously," Lee says, noting that Discovery Girls the only tween magazine that was nominated for an award.

"The real girls we feature in each issue are our future leaders and role models," Lee says, "because they are helping girls to believe that they are the stars of their own lives," Lee says. "By showing their true selves and speaking up about their struggles now, they can help each other. This generation of girls is so powerful-they've already made it safer for other girls just like them. I believe that, together, this generation of tweens can do anything they set their minds to…just like they've shown us all that their voices really do matter!"
