  • (1888PressRelease) October 08, 2014 - Some of the best athletes from across the globe will flock to the Ali'i Drive in the Kailua-Kona district of the Big Island, Hawaii this October 11, 2014 for arguably the most challenging sports event: the Ironman World Championship.

Featuring a 2.4 mile open water swim, 112-mile bike and a 26.2 mile run, the annual Ironman triathlon has been hosted by the Aloha State since 1978, and it is easy to see why, explained Harold Clarke, founder of LuxuryBigIsland.com.

"Hawaii is the perfect venue for a sports event like the Ironman Triathlon World Championship. We are home to the most breathtaking and challenging terrains, the loveliest beaches, and a community that loves thrilling outdoor adventures," he said.

As the grand finale of qualifying races held around the world, Ironman Hawaii enjoys intense media exposure, and gathers thousands of spectators eager to witness how the athletes fare in this ultimate test of endurance.

This year, the record to beat for men belongs to Craig Alexander of Australia, whose winning time in 2011 was 8 hrs 3 mins 56 sec. For the women, the record is held by Mirinda Carfrae, who completed the course in 8 hrs 52 mins 14 sec in 2013. Carfrae, who is also from Australia, also holds the run record of 2 hrs 50 mins 38 sec.

The race begins in Kailua-Kona Bay with the swim, followed by bike race, to Hawi and back, then a run along the coast from Keauhou to Keahole Point. All throughout, the participants will be treated to panoramic views of the Hawaiian coastline, the rolling hills, foot trails, and even the astonishing lava and petroglyph fields.

Then, they can retire to some of the best hotels in the area, and enjoy the beautiful views from their lanai, cocktails in hand. Alternatively, they can attend any of the lavish dinners and post-race parties thrown for the attendees.

As such, Harold enthusiastically invites people to come, "Bring your entire family to watch! It is for everyone who appreciates being near Hawaii's natural wonders, and watching sports feats happen."
