  • (1888PressRelease) January 30, 2013 - Most companies land themselves in trouble because they are unaware of the nuances of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This Act has become more powerful because the Department of Labor (DOL) empowers employees to make complaints of unfair labor standards using a smartphone application that has been created in association with the American Bar Association (ABA).

Lawsuits emerging out of companies' non-adherence to FLSA provisions are becoming increasingly popular. This is because one of the provisions of the FLSA, the one relating to supplemental pay, is not properly and fully understood by employers.
This session will help participants understand areas relating to supplemental pay under the FLSA.

It will delve into issues such as when employees have to be paid to get dressed and undressed; when the employer needs to pay them to be on an airplane and when they don't; what breaks need to be paid and what breaks don't need to be paid; why companies have to pay for breastfeeding, and other areas of supplemental pay. Attending this session will enable participants to reduce chances of being investigated by ensuring that their pay practices are in compliance.

    Areas covered in the session:
o Understanding who is a covered employer
o Understanding who is a covered employee
    o The basics of overtime
    o Handling shift-differentials
    o Dealing with On-call time
    o Handling meals and breaks

o Putting to bed the issues of sleeping breaks
