Riders also have the option of joining two shorter tour segments: "Samba" from Rio de Janeiro to Florianopolis (1,400 km / 870 miles) Aug. 14-29, 2011, priced at $2,100 per person, or "Tango" from Florianopolis to Buenos Aires (1,690 km / 1,050 miles) Aug. 31-Sep. 18, 2011, for $2,400 per person.

Accommodations while cycling include camping, hostels and home stays. Tour d'Afrique provides the framework and support systems, including: tour staff, nutritious meals, campsites and other accommodations, daily routes and logistics, optional side trips and the overland vehicles that transport rider baggage each day.

This is a brand-new adventure for the Toronto-based company that lights fires in cyclists' bellies by offering nine distinct multi-week journeys in 2011 that span the globe from Asia to Africa, Europe to the Americas.

After leaving Rio de Janeiro cyclists will follow the coast road from Rio to Santos, passing through intense rain forests like the Juréia Reserve, skimming the surf on hard-packed beaches and pedaling past sun-swept islands from Cananéia all the way to Paranaguá.

Then it's up the Graciosa Road to the cycling-crazed city of Curitiba, followed by a ride along Brazil's first bike touring route, the Circuito Vale Europeu. Heading back to the coast, riders will spin through the southern mountains (Serra do Corvo Branco, Serra do Rio do Rastro, Canyon Fortaleza and Canyon do Itambeizinho).

"Add in the world´s largest beach (Cassino Beach), Taim Ecological Reserve that is a bird lover's paradise and the hip and musically vibrant cities of Florianopolis, Porto Alegre, Montevideo and Buenos Aires and you have a ride like no other," says Tour d'Afrique founder and director Henry Gold.
