Three POP Chemicals Regulated in Switzerland

SGS highlights the prohibition of three POP chemicals in Switzerland.
- (1888PressRelease) May 29, 2025 - Geneva - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 064.25, highlighting Switzerland’s prohibition on the production and use of three persistent organic pollutant (POP) chemicals.
The use of POP chemicals, often in flame retardants or pesticides, has declined in many parts of the world due to their links to serious health issues, such as cancer. As a signatory to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP Convention), Switzerland has introduced restrictive regulations to address their toxicity and bioaccumulation in the environment.
The most recent mandate, published as RO 2025 244, adds methoxychlor, Dechlorane Plus and UV-328 to the list of prohibited substances for elimination in Part 1 of Appendix A of the nation’s POP Convention. The ban came into effect in February 2025.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 064.25 includes a helpful table with further information on the applications of the relevant POP chemicals, as well as their scope and requirements under RO 2025 244.
Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 064.25 for more details.
