Three New Books Bring Montgomery County History to Life Through Rare Photographs and Reed Brothers Dodge
Companion books to Montgomery History’s online exhibits preserve the photography of Lewis Reed, Montgomery County then-and-now views, and nearly a century of Reed Brothers Dodge history.

Gartner has published three new books created as companion volumes to online exhibits produced by Montgomery History. Together, the books explore Montgomery County’s past through historic photographs, modern comparative views, and the story of Reed Brothers Dodge, one of the nation’s oldest Dodge dealerships under continuous family ownership.
Montgomery County, 1900-1930 Through the Lens of Lewis Reed showcases the work of Lewis Reed (1887-1967), a pioneering automobile dealer and prolific photographer who began taking pictures around 1898. His photographs preserve an extraordinary visual record of Montgomery County during the early twentieth century and form the basis of Montgomery History’s online exhibit devoted to Lewis Reed Photography, 1900-1930.
Montgomery County: Then and Now - Photography of Lewis Reed and Barry Gartner pairs Reed’s historic photographs with contemporary views taken by his grandson, Barry Gartner, often from or near the same locations more than a century later. The book complements Montgomery History’s Montgomery County: Then and Now online exhibit and reveals both dramatic change and surprising continuity across the county.
The newest volume, Reed Brothers Dodge: Montgomery County’s Oldest Dodge Dealership, chronicles the Rockville family business founded in 1915 and operated by three consecutive generations until 2012. Illustrated with historic photographs, advertisements, documents, and archival material, the book expands upon Montgomery History’s online exhibit and presents the definitive history of a dealership that grew alongside Rockville and Montgomery County for nearly a century.
Together, the three books preserve different but closely connected chapters of local history and expand upon Montgomery History’s online exhibits with additional photographs, research, and archival material. About the Author
Jeanne T. Gartner is a local historian, author, and granddaughter of Reed Brothers Dodge founder and photographer Lewis Reed. A 30-year veteran of the United States Air Force, she retired as a Chief Master Sergeant in 2006 and later returned to the family dealership. Gartner is the author of five books preserving Reed Brothers Dodge, Lewis Reed’s photography, and Montgomery County history. In 2016, she received the Arthur M. Wagman Award for Historic Preservation Communication from Peerless Rockville.
