  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) January 07, 2016 - After more than 20 years with Laboratory Testing Inc. (LTI), three dedicated employees, Glenn Derstine, Tom Scherer and Ron Popowitz, have retired this past year. The owners of the family business, Mike and Joan McVaugh, congratulated the group at the company's holiday luncheon last week. The retirees were each awarded a plaque for their service to the company and a cash gift.

Glenn Derstine had been with Laboratory Testing Inc. since 1988, holding the position of Destructive Testing Manager - Mechanical Testing & Machine Shop for the first 25 years. In preparation for retirement, he began working in 2012 with third-generation family member, Brandon McVaugh, to transition him into the role. McVaugh served as Assistant Manager of the Department from August 2012 until he was promoted to Destructive Testing Manager - Mechanical Testing & Machine Shop in 2013. At that time, Derstine became Senior Technical Advisor for Mechanical Testing, the position he held until retirement.

The Mechanical Testing Department offers an extensive list of services that evaluate mechanical properties, including tensile, charpy impact and hardness testing, fracture toughness and fatigue testing, stress rupture and creep testing, and more. Various mechanical tests also evaluate the effects of heat treatments on mechanical properties. Test results provide customers with information about the suitability of their materials for their intended applications.

Tom Scherer joined the company in 1990 as a technician in the Hydrostatic Pressure Testing Lab. About two years later, he moved to Shipping & Receiving where he held the position of material handler and was later promoted to supervisor. Ron Popowitz followed in 1993 when he was hired as a driver for the Shipping & Receiving Department to provide pick-up and delivery services for the Lab's customers. It was estimated that Scherer opened about 406,000 packages during his years with Lab Testing and Popowitz drove over 1,071,000 miles. Although officially retired, both employees have stayed on at LTI, working part-time schedules.
