  • San Jose, CA (1888PressRelease) August 18, 2012 - Thermo Fisher Scientific is pleased to announce that its continuing leadership in ion chromatography (IC) solutions for water analysis has reached another milestone. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has approved a new Thermo Fisher Scientific 2-D IC method for the analysis of trace bromates (EPA Method 302) and trace perchlorate (EPA Method 314.2).

In addition, the Thermo Fisher Scientific 2D-IC method has been issued a new patent US 8,101,422 titled, Multidimensional Chromatography Apparatus and Method and was developed by senior Thermo Fisher Scientific scientists Dr. Kannan Srinivasan and Dr. Rong Lin at our Sunnyvale California facility. The patent discusses a 2-D IC matrix elimination application for the analysis of trace ionic contaminants in drinking water samples that are difficult to analyze due to interferences from high levels of matrix ions. The new 2-D methods were developed to provide a easy to use, sensitive, automated analysis platform for analyzing trace ions in the presence of matrix ions. The use of suppressed conductivity detection simplifies the ion analysis without the need for post column derivatization methods which are difficult to implement. The 2-D methods eliminate labor intensive, manual sample prep routines geared for removing the matrix ions. For this reason more and more 2-D methods are being approved by the US EPA Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water for routine compliance monitoring.

The simplicity of the Thermo Fisher Scientific Reagent-Free Ion Chromatography (RFIC™) technique combined with 2-D analysis is superior for trace analysis in high matrix samples. Matrix ions interfere with chromatography as well as with detection. For example, interfering ions consume column capacity resulting in either peak band broadening or completely obscure trace analytes making detection very difficult
