  • Chicago, IL (1888PressRelease) March 19, 2018 - In a world of immediate digital gratification, short-term relationships, and fees at every turn, Cavetone Records has spent a decade tearing it all down.

While the logic of modern society dictates that Cavetone Records should have disappeared long ago, they have flourished for the last decade and are set to host their tenth anniversary show at the Empty Bottle on March 19.

From recording to distribution, Cavetone Records has always done things differently. In place of computers, they chose tape and tubes. Instead of digital downloads, they press vinyl through a family-run plant. In lieu of cover charge at live events, they work with venues to keep the night free.

This conscientious approach to music results from Cavetone Records being run by musicians, for musicians.

“Every decision that we have made this decade defied traditional logic, but then again, most days I’d reach for a record by The Troggs over The Beatles,” said Scott Walus, who is the founder and Head of Media for Cavetone Records as well as one half of The Ex-Bombers. “Musicians running a label with other musicians and putting it out only on vinyl? It makes no sense. Yet here we are, celebrating our anniversary at a cover-free show at the Empty Bottle.”

Previously held in Columbia, Mo., Charleston, Ill., St. Louis, Mo., and Tuscola, Ill., Cavetone Records’ anniversary shows have defiantly remained free of charge. Throughout the years, the label has sought to partner with locations that do not use a cover charge. These locations are not just venues, but galleries, restaurant, and record stores.

“We wanted to bring live music back to its roots,” said Keri Cousins, President of Cavetone Records. “We have played in traditional and nontraditional spaces without any sort of charge for our music because we want to share it. While we only release music on vinyl, we play our music for anyone and everyone.”

Thee Cavetone Records 10 Year Anniversary Spectacular at the Empty Bottle continues this long-standing tradition of free live music with a four band lineup of labelmates. Gypsy folk punkers Apathy Wizards take the stage first followed by echo-y noise pop duo Cedar Plank Salmon with seedy pop duo The Ex-Bombers in the headlining slot and big riff rockers Sasquatch Turf War closing the night with the release of their debut LP.

While each band separately plays and perfects their own esoteric style of pop, they are united as members of the Cavetone family. “Only Scott and Keri could get us to drive up from Murfreesboro, Tennessee on a Monday,” said Thor Goodman of Apathy Wizards. “They're not a folk punk label, but they definitely get the ethos. They brought in a whole analog recording studio into a bar to record our first LP absolutely live.”

The analog model of recording is, by all accounts, an outdated method that relies on the use of expensive, cumbersome, hard-to-find equipment to meticulously record music – but the results give Cavetone Records’ recordings a uniquely warm and natural sound.
Even after the music is mixed to tape, Cavetone Records cuts no corners with distribution. The tapes are cut to lacquer and pressed to vinyl only sold at independent record stores and after live shows. There are no official Cavetone digital releases.

Thee Cavetone Records 10 Year Anniversary Spectacular, as the name suggests, is one-night only and spectacular. The acts include Apathy Wizards (Gypsy folk punk from Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Cedar Plank Salmon (Echo-y noise pop from Chicago), The Ex-Bombers (Sadistic jazz-y pop duo from Charleston, Ill.), and Sasquatch Turf War (Big riff rockets from Chicago).

The live music begins at 9 p.m., open to ages 21 and up and free of charge. The Empty Bottle is located at 1035 N. Western Ave. in Chicago, Ill.
