The U.S. Department of Labor awards $1.1 Million to a Detroit Youth Training Program

  • Detroit, MI (1888PressRelease) July 31, 2013 - On June 26, 2013, SER Metro-Detroit, Jobs for Progress, Inc., was awarded a U.S. Department of Labor grant in the amount of $1,100,000.00 to provide youth ages 18 to 24 years old with basic skills/academic and occupational skills training in the construction field.

    SER offers the training for this grant through the SER YouthBuild Construction Institute, which has received funding from the US Department of Labor since July 1, 2009 to operate this Program. SER YouthBuild Construction Institute will train 67 Detroit youth who will receive a GED and the construction credentials necessary for employment in this demand field. O'Brien Construction has partnered with SER Metro-Detroit since the program started in 2009 and provides participants with on-the-job training on various affordable and low-income housing projects located in Detroit. Youth also engage in extensive leadership development activities and service-learning projects that meet critical needs in communities across Detroit.
