  • (1888PressRelease) August 28, 2020 - When bespoke jewellers De Vere Diamonds of Hatton Garden, London, opened their ‘Your Luxury, Your Way’ competition in July, they didn’t expect the designs submitted to win a gold and diamond smartphone would reveal the heart felt stories of love, loss, and the future hopes and dreams of the newly labelled Covid Generation.

Originally created as a promotion for the run up to the launch of the much anticipated Apple iPhone 12, the De Vere Diamonds ‘Your Luxury, Your Way’ competition encourages entrants to design their own luxury smartphone based on the latest version of the iPhone, and have the winning design created for them in precious metals and gemstones by expert jewellers and goldsmiths.

“It soon became apparent how many designs were inspired by personal stories” said Philip De Vere, Managing Director of De Vere Diamonds. “Stories of lost loved ones, friendship, and hopes for the future in a post Coronavirus world. Many designs were submitted by young people, deemed the Covid Generation”.

“We decided to dig a little deeper into some of the designs submitted”, he added. “We found that many designs reflect the way the world is today, good and bad. Designs influenced by recent events and movements, such as Black Lives Matter. Designs inspired by the loss of loved ones, whether friends, family members, children or pets. Designs that reflect what is important to us in terms of rights, equality, inclusion, and the environment. Designs created with the wish to try and leave the anxiety of the present behind and look forward to happier times in the future. To a world once more filled with laughter, positivity and opportunity.

“The competition’s submitted designs aim to capture memories, experiences and stories of the past and put them onto an item that can then capture new experiences, memories and stories for the future” said Philip De Vere. “It becomes more than just a smartphone taking pictures. You have a part of the individual, experience or story that inspired the design with you. They have also become an integral part of any new experience”.

“Today the smartphone plays a significant role in our lives. It never leaves us. It is something we hold physically close to us every day. We wanted to give people the opportunity to have a design on an item that had a personal relevance and meaning to them” Philip De Vere added. “The experience of creating memories and stories for the future through a smartphone that has a design that links to shared and happy memories and stories from the past. Stories of something that made them smile, think of a loved friend, recall a happy memory of a lost loved one. Any memory or story that they hold close, and that they would love to hold close and have that memory or story form part of their new memories and stories through being part of the phone that captures them. You always have a part of the person, event, memory or experience that inspired the design with you, in your hand”.

In a world full of uncertainty, these are designs to make you feel positive every time you look at them and recall the memory that inspired them, putting a smile on your face.

Submissions for the competition have been received from all over the world, but the underlying themes are all very similar, reflecting how the same issues affect us all, wherever we live.

Themes that cover every idea you can think of. From the ever popular rainbow, depicting both the love and respect for our healthcare workers, to the love and respect found within the LGBTQ communities, reproduced in a spectrum of precious gemstones.

Many designs have illustrated the strength of opinion for the Black Lives Matter movement. Powerful images represented in gold and diamonds in a show of visual defiance.

Many designs also reflect the creation of a more open and inclusive society, closing the gap of social inequality, promoting diversity, women’s rights and a better future for everyone.

This better future, the ongoing fight against climate change and the growth in importance of sustainability is reflected in the wish of entrants submitting designs that incorporate ethically sourced, alternative and environmentally friendly materials such as ‘vegan leathers’ made from grape skins and pineapple leaves, to gemstones and metals that can be traced back to their source. A source where communities benefit from Fairtrade and FairPay initiatives.

“These submitted designs have formed a snapshot of our world as it is right here, right now, highlighting what is important to us, and what has now become important to us in the post pandemic future. They have become the stories behind the designs behind the most beautiful phones in the world” Philip De Vere said. “For the owners of these devices, they ARE the most beautiful phones in the world. They are created from a beautiful memories and experiences, to deliver new beautiful memories and experiences”.

The designs submitted to the Your Luxury, Your Way competition can be viewed on the De Vere Diamonds website.
