  • (1888PressRelease) July 10, 2018 - SMi’s 2nd annual Maritime Information Warfare conference is returning to London on 26 - 27 November 2018 as the only event that approaches the concept of 'information warfare' in the maritime domain, a particularly vital naval topic as the need to embrace information to enhance operational effectiveness increases.

In April, The Royal Navy held its annual "Information Warrior" exercise, once again testing its maritime information warfare capabilities. In the wake of the exercise (IW18) Commodore Ian Annett, Assistant Chief of Staff Information Warfare and Chief Information Officer, Royal Navy and key speaker at this year’s Maritime Information Warfare event reported:

"IW18 has more than simply benchmarked current capability to allow for further testing, it has demonstrated available technology to progress the Royal Navy’s Information Warfare vision, through both the development of its own representative open architecture and close participation from industry" [SAAB].

Commodore Annett will be presenting at this year’s conference, discussing “The Navy in a data driven world: Information exploitation and increasing Royal Navy’s leadership in information warfare”. In addition to Commodore Annett, the two-day event will provide attendees with comprehensive technical briefings from other leading maritime experts from the Danish Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, Portuguese Navy, Spanish MoD and NATO MARCOM as they present on key themes from the Information Warrior exercise such as:

    • Artificial Intelligence and Big Data
    • Cyber & Electromagnetic Activity
    • Information Exploitation and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)
    • Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence
    • Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance

The event will also host a post-conference workshop on Cyber Warfare in the Maritime Domain on 28th November 2018, hosted by Colonel (Ret'd) Ralph Thiele, Director, StratByrd Consulting. Delegates will have the opportunity to hear an overview of the operational challenges and opportunities in organising cyber defence of naval assets, and a comprehensive coverage of recent developments in cyber security strategy and concepts.

The latest conference brochure is now available to download on the event website, where attendees can also register and receive real-time updates in the lead up to the conference. Register by the 28th September and receive a £200 discount on your booking.
