  • (1888PressRelease) October 12, 2017 - The Refuge tells the story of a women’s aid centre where four girls are living in an isolated fortress gatehouse and forced to take an antidepressant treatment.

This short film is a protest against the current crisis that UK aid centres are facing due to drastic cuts in government funding. The Refuge sheds light on the fact that women are being marginalized instead of being accepted into society.

The Refuge is proud to feature Lujza Richter Hugo known for Phantom Thread by Paul Thomas Anderson and model / actress Demi Hannah Scott known for her constant work at SHOWStudio with Nick Knife, and for being the face of Uniqlo, Fenty Puma and many other world-class brands.

Maria Millan is a London-based image maker originally from Venezuela. Maria’s talent lies in breath-takingingly beautiful storytelling, as she utilises the subtle art of tension. Her fashion videos and pictures effortlessly bring buried emotion and sentiment to the surface. You can find her intriguing work in Vogue, Jute, Fruk and Ellements Magazine amongst others.

This film is no documentary, Maria stays true to her love of fashion and aesthetics as she enchants her audience with a film where every still could be found in the centrefold of a high-fashion magazine. Her playful use of colour and texture creates a beautiful world that engages the spectator with the intense story that lies beneath the sublime and striking surface.

Tackling gender disparity in an often-frightening world dictated by money and male ego, The Refuge holds a mirror to the contemporary misogyny that is having tragic implications on real lives.

The team behind The Refuge wants to spread the message right around the world and they need your help in order to fund festival submissions, PR and marketing, in exchange they are offering catsuits, fancy dresses, and having Director Maria Millan to direct a ten minutes video for you, or a professional photo shoot including completed retouched images.
