  • Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN-WI (1888PressRelease) July 21, 2010 - "Greater Than Magnets" marks The Oh Eeks' first full length release, and one would never know it was recorded in a basement…of a Saint Paul sober house. Not only was the album brought forth from a humble subterranean beginning, but the creators themselves were undergoing a resurrection.

Johnny Park and Dan DeMuth both grew up as musicians in the Twin Cities, but never crossed paths until they serendipitously landed in a St. Paul sober house on the same day. Both musicians had struggled with substance abuse for years and had lost their passion for music in the course of their pursuit of excess. As they began to recover, the hunger to make music was rekindled, and together they began recording songs Park had written while bouncing between rehab, jail, and life on the street.

As they worked, new material emerged. As this came to life, The Oh Eeks and the album "Greater Than Magnets" were born. The new songs have a brutal honesty rather than apologetic regret, have a sentiment of remorse, and take a true step toward redemption.

The resulting basement tapes were as gritty and rough as the checkered past they represented, but band was on the straight and narrow now and desired a sound to reflect that commitment. They brought the tracks to Justin Schwartzbauer at Toefist Studios and, over the course of six months, they were scoured and washed clean much like the boys themselves. Now with a full-length album on the horizon and a growing fan base, they needed to fill out their sound on the stage.

The duo has enlisted Al Vorse (Sirens of Titan) laying down the bass, and guitarist Jimmy Bayard (one the finest pickers Texas has to offer) to round out the live act. Playing almost weekly throughout the cities for the past year and half, the boys have earned a following and have undeniably cemented a live sound that commands attention.

The Saint Paul based band has crafted a captivating breed of punk inspired, country-laden folk-rock with a clean pop sound, delivering gritty, honest and dark tales of addiction and the trials associated with that lifestyle. Akin to a more country driven Weezer, early Pavement, or hometown pals The Hold Steady.

On Saturday, July 24th, Saint Paul band The Oh Eeks will release their long awaited full length album, "Greater Than Magnets" with a celebration at Hell's Kitchen, 80 South 9th Street, in Minneapolis. (612-332-4700) The show costs $6, $12 for entry and an album, will start at 10 p.m., and promises to be a night to remember. H.U.D. will open at 7 p.m.
