  • (1888PressRelease) February 28, 2012 - PEKIN, ILL. - The International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals Foundation (iaedp), which established the certification process to promote standards of excellence within the field of eating disorders, launches a new certification program for nurses in the field of eating disorder treatment. Recognizing that registered nurses play a pivotal role during the treatment process of eating disordered patients, the iaedp Foundation has developed the Certified Eating Disorders Registered Nurse (CEDRN) certification.

"It truly takes an experienced and committed multi-disciplinary treatment team to help patients in their recovery from eating disorders," said Bonnie Harken, managing director of The iaedp Foundation. "CEDRN certification is earned by nurses who have met educational requirements, accumulated a minimum number of hours of qualifying work experience, successfully passed a written examination covering the eating disorders field, made a commitment to stay abreast of current developments in the field through Continuing Education and agreed to comply with the Association's Ethical Principles."

The innovative certification program was co-developed by iaedp and two nurses currently playing significant roles in the field. Carolyn Jones, RN, LPC, CEDS and Director of Nursing at Denver's Eating Recovery Center, and Lynn Stark, APRN, MSN, COO and clinical nurse specialist at McCallum Place in St. Louis, understand first-hand the difference nurses can make in the care and lives of eating disorder patients. Jones has specialized in the treatment of eating disorders and body image issues for more than 20 years. Also with 20 years of noted expertise, Stark has provided group and individual therapy to adults and adolescents with eating disorders and other psychiatric illnesses.

The iaedp Foundation established CEDRN to further promote standards of excellence within the field of eating disorders. Healthcare professionals who demonstrate clinical expertise through education, experience and examination are eligible for certification as a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS) in mental health, a Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) and the new Certified Eating Disorders Registered Nurse (CEDRN).

Certification is the focus during the iaedp Foundation's Symposium 2012 from March 22 - 25 in Charleston, S.C. Eating disorder professionals are encouraged to register for Symposium 2012 as early as possible to take advantage of both flight and hotel discounts.
