  • Atlanta, GA (1888PressRelease) April 05, 2012 - In celebration of black girls and women, The Black Doll Affair (BDA), a philanthropic organization and self esteem movement for black girls and women, will present a fashion show at Macy's. During the spring season, The Black Doll Affair Fashion Show will be hosted by Nina Brown and Rashan Ali and is scheduled for Saturday May 5, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Macy's Lenox Square store.

The wheels of The Black Doll Affair movement began turning in 2007. Four years later, for its commitment in philanthropy and efforts to change the way black girls and women are perceived and perceive themselves; BDA has garnered thousands of supportive members called The Black Dolls. Entities such as Essence Magazine, The Tom Joyner Morning Show, The Microsoft Company, Meetup Inc., Mattel and the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty have each given a lift to the BDA little movement that could. In 2009, supported by Georgia's Governor, Mayor, Atlanta City Council, GA House of Representatives and the GA State Senate, BDA received a Proclamation for Black Doll Affair Day [December 12] in the State of Georgia! The Black Dolls went on invitation to Congressman John Lewis' Washington DC office and President Obama's White House. Recently, BDA received a Volunteer Service Award from President Obama.

In 2005, Hill, the Founder of BDA, put up a self-reflecting billboard at the corner of 52nd and Broadway in Times Square, closed her eyes and made a wish. A self-promoting African American model, publicist and marketer, Hill's wish was for corporate giants and advertising powerhouses to see her likeness and be inspired to use more African Americans in their marketing campaigns. The concept was simple, diversity. Hill's "Got Spokesmodel? campaign fell short of its goal. Eyes wide open to the fact that it was going to take more than a billboard, Hill allowed her campaign to expire. In 2007, Hill saw the documentary 'A Girl Like Me'. The documentary showed black children choosing the black doll as bad and ugly and the white doll as pretty, good and the one they preferred. To change that, Hill decided to throw what was supposed to be a one-time Christmas party where black women showed up as living dolls and for positive play, then leave behind a donation of a doll for black children. Today, BDA has living Black Dolls all over the country and recognition from Macy's Diversity Team. As they say, the rest is history. Or in this case, magic!

"Macy's and The Black Doll Affair share a couple of key interests - we are fashion and community oriented. We are pleased to partner with the BDA in this endeavor to showcase and celebrate the diversity of an important part of our customer base and the community," said Bill Hawthorne, Macy's senior vice president, Diversity Strategies and Legal Affairs.

    About The Black Doll Affair
Created as a solution to ugly doll tests results, The Black Doll Affair [BDA] is a social organization driven by its members, The Black Dolls. Official playground chapters are in Atlanta [HQ], Chicago, Houston, Miami, New York, New Orleans and Washington, DC. The Black Dolls range in shade and shape. Eighteen years and older, from college students to grandmothers, career women to ladies of leisure, they are role models that band together to tackle the black family's issues with shadeism, self hatred and low self-esteem. To deliver their message of internal and external b'huety, they donate toy black dolls to toddlers, host tween self-esteem summits and produce special events that promote and uplift black women. For fun, The Black Dolls enjoy each other at social play dates. To express the importance of community service, annually they donate hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to charitable causes that affect all races. These are the Affairs of The Black Dolls.
