  • (1888PressRelease) April 06, 2011 - Detroit - In a study conducted in 2007, The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty estimated that annual homelessness in America was approximately 3.5 million people, of which 1.35 million were children. No one ever imagines themselves being a part of these types of statistics and yet an increasing number of people are finding themselves in this distressed situation every day.

Take for instance, Versandra Kennebrew, a working class single woman who had to take refuge in a Detroit area homeless shelter in 2003 with the undertaking of restoring her life during an economic crisis that struck her with a very hard blow. Despite her efforts to work hard building a business, she found herself in a place where she lost almost everything she owned.

Fortunately, Versandra's story didn't end there. In a 9-month period, she was able to pick herself up from what may have been her lowest state, and now has become a mouthpiece for others who are struggling to get back up again from the sting of homelessness. It wasn't a smooth road, but she is a testament to the fact that you can turn your life around if you have a firm desire to take action.

It is imperative that stories like this are shared and that strategies are formulated to treat these crucial issues in a holistic and sustainable manner, to reach permanent and lasting solutions for our homeless communities today; and Versandra Kennebrew is one person who has an unyielding desire to make that happen!

On a national scale, homelessness is a very important issue that must continue to be addressed. It is affecting people of all backgrounds. Families with children, single adults, elderly individuals, veterans, and youth all experience homelessness. This social-economic problem exists in rural areas, small towns, suburban neighborhoods, and big cities.

In effort to address the issue Versandra Kennebrew is doing a 10-City Tour, where she will be film screening her new stage play, "Thank God for the Shelter LIVE" in local colleges and universities across the country. It's a homeless awareness and sensitivity film that reaches out to college students who are studying in the mental health and human services fields as well as prime communities in need of such information. Please join Versandra in the mission to bring awareness to the new face of homelessness in America by bringing Thank God for the Shelter LIVE to your students and staff.
