  • Bergen-Passaic, NJ (1888PressRelease) February 01, 2014 - The Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel Senior Youth Group recently held a whirlwind Mitzvah Mania Day, dedicated to creating gifts of comfort, performing community outreach work and helping those in need. The high school students spent a chilly Sunday making sandwiches for Isaiah's House, Origami Cranes for Cancer support, Valentine's Day cards for our troops, toiletry packages for the Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges, Valentine's Day packages for children in the New York Presbyterian Hospital, blankets for Project Linus, dog biscuits for the Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter and wrapping utensils for a soup kitchen.

They researched causes to support in advance of performing the "mitzvoth," a Hebrew word which is acts of love and kindness that are commanded by the Torah.

Tracy Horwitz, LSW, TSTI's youth group program director, said, "Our programs are created and implemented by teens for teens. I am proud of our youth for planning such a meaningful and impactful event and taking the time from their busy schedules to make a difference in the lives of so many people."

Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel is located at 432 Scotland Road in South Orange. It has an active youth group program for younger and older teens as well as a vibrant social action committee that engages its members in various community outreach projects.
