  • (1888PressRelease) March 23, 2012 - ST-CMS Electric Company, a subsidiary of the global energy company Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA), today announced that it has contributed US$50,000 to the Chief minster's public relief fund for Tamil Nadu Government's relief and rehabilitation efforts following Cyclone Thane in December 2011.

This follows an initial donation made by ST-CMS Electric Company's employees. The funds will be used to rehabilitate local farming fields and repair damage to infrastructure in Tamil Nadu caused by the cyclone, which hit over 200,000 homes in four districts of the region and tragically left many people dead.

    R. Balachandar, Managing Director of ST-CMS Electric Company said: "We are committed to supporting the local communities of cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu in the aftermath of Cyclone Thane. Playing an active role in helping with the re-building efforts is of the utmost importance to us - our company welcomes its responsibilities and we are all eager to benefit the people of Tamil Nadu further by developing security of electricity supply and sustaining the future growth of the state."

TAQA is the owner of ST-CMS Electric Company Pvt. Ltd. (ST-CMS) which operates the 250 MW lignite-fired power plant - India's first solid fuel-based Independent Power Project (IPP) - in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, the same region devastated by Cyclone Thane in December of 2011. TAQA release said that it has matched the amount raised by its local employees, and plans to continue its support for the region by expanding its existing project in Neyveli. This will provide the region with the energy resources it requires in today's climate of rapid population growth and industrialisation.
