  • (1888PressRelease) April 27, 2011 - Samut Prakan -Tana Netting Co., Ltd. and Kenya Airways jointly celebrated World Malaria Day 2011 with a strong determination to raise awareness about malaria and its prevention in order to help reduce the number of people who are suffering and dying from this dangerous mosquito-borne disease. A limited edition of Dawa®Plus, a long-lasting insecticidal mosquito net, was provided to every passenger on Kenya Airways' Bangkok-Nairobi flight departing on April 22, 2011 at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets (LLINs) are one of the most effective tools in combating malaria. They are impregnated with a synthetic pyrethroid such as deltamethrin which repels, knocks down and kills mosquitoes. Dawa®Plus is one of its kind, widely used in Sub-Saharan Africa, South America and Asia.

Along with the Dawa®Plus package Tana Netting provided the passengers an information leaflet about malaria, its prevention and what individuals and businesses can do to help eradicate this deadly disease.

World Malaria Day, to be held on 25th April of each year, was propagated by the World Health Assembly at its 60th session in 2007, to encourage and recognize the world wide effort to combat Malaria. Malaria affects nearly 500 million people every year and is fatal for nearly a million people, more so in the Sub-Saharan, African and other developing countries. It kills more young children than any other single disease in the world, claiming the life of a child every 45 seconds. The international community has set the goal that by 2015 malaria is no longer a major cause of mortality and no longer a barrier to social and economic development and growth anywhere in the world.

"Roll Back Malaria's findings are showing that between 2008-2010, around 300 million LLINs were delivered to sub-Saharan Africa and global malaria deaths have dropped by almost 10% between 2008 and 2009. That means we are on the right track," said Jurgen Swinckels, Managing Director of Tana Netting Co., Ltd.

    About DAWA
Dawa®Plus was conceived in 2005 when Tana Netting started to develop an end-of-the-line treatment process for long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) in a public-private partnership with USAID and Bayer.

Dawa®Plus is made from 100% polyester and is treated with the insecticide deltamethrin, which repels, knocks down and kills mosquitoes, thereby reducing the risk of malaria transmission and ensuring a good night's sleep. The insecticide on Dawa®Plus remains effective for over 20 washes, offering durable protection. Unlike conventional insecticide treated nets (ITNs), which must be re-treated every four to five washes, Dawa®Plus requires no re-treatment over the lifetime of the net.
