  • (1888PressRelease) May 30, 2018 - The one-day American agriculture and food product trade event, organized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), was held at the Taj Clubhouse and was attended by representatives from the retail, HORECA, and culinary sectors in large numbers. This event brought together stakeholders across the industry on a single platform to exchange information, develop awareness, and create commercial opportunities with Chennai-based businesses.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Jeanne F. Bailey, Minister-Counselor for Agricultural Affairs, at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, said, “We are glad to be instrumental in providing a suitable platform for all of the industry’s relevant stakeholders to exchange ideas and explore ways to boost business ties with each other.” She added, “I am confident that partnerships and other opportunities that are provided here for American and Indian organizations in the F&B sector and food and agricultural industries will benefit from increased exchanges.” Ms. Bailey added that, “American agricultural and related exports to India were nearly $2.0 billion in 2017, while imports into the United States of Indian agricultural and related goods were $5.0 billion. We think bilateral trade flows should be a lot higher considering the potential each market holds for the other, and believe American products would be welcomed by Indian food service professionals and consumers as opportunities are created. ”

Mr. Adam Branson, Senior Ag. Attache for USDA FAS, added, “We see the potential in Chennai and are excited to support the growth of U.S.-origin, consumer-oriented products and ingredients in the market, while also helping Indian businesses and food service professionals expand their range of products and supplies. Over the past few years, we have held similar events in Pune, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Jaipur, and Goa. In each and every case, we’ve seen these programs create choice and competition, which ultimately helps businesses and provides consumers with great alternatives.”

The information sessions provided new learning opportunities for students of hospitality management, young and aspiring chefs, and up-and-coming executives in food and agricultural companies on the versatility and availability of a range of U.S. products, as well as health-related and other technical information.

The table-top exhibition that was held later in the day showcased exciting food and beverage products from the United States that attracted retailers, Chefs, purchase and procurement personnel, F&B heads in leading hotel and restaurant chains, relevant executives in food and agricultural companies, as well as importers and master distributors of food products. The aim was to introduce Indian hoteliers, restauranteurs and food retailers to both traditional and new American food and beverage products. Consumer-oriented and high-value food products such as tree nuts / dried fruits, peanut-based snacks, and barbeque sauces were some of the products exhibited at the event, and visitors to the event looked happy that they had the opportunity to taste some of these delicious products.

USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service has offices across the globe that facilitate commercial exchanges between American agricultural businesses and food and beverage importers / local buyers. FAS has partnered with a corporate events consultancy,‘V4 Events Pvt Ltd.’, to curate and put together this event. With this activity, USDA aims to highlight and promote a range of U.S. food, beverage, and agricultural products being imported and distributed in the local market.
