  • Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN-WI (1888PressRelease) April 24, 2013 - Survivor Resources is hosting its 11th annual walk-a-thon at Como Park East Pavilion in St. Paul on Monday, May 20th.

The walk-a-thon "Walk to Remember, Walk for Hope," raises money for Survivor Resources. A non-profit organization, Survivor Resources lends its supportive services to more than 650 individuals grieving the loss of a family member or friend who have died as a result of homicide, suicide or an accidental death.

The walk-a-thon welcomes all ages to join in the fundraiser and will feature various, engaging activities. A picnic dinner at 6:00 p.m. will kick off the event, provided by Divine Swine. Participants will have the opportunity to meet K-9 police and mounted patrol. They can also witness robot demonstrations and get an in-depth, up close look at SWAT equipment and squad cars.

The walk will begin after dinner at 7:45 p.m. The evening will conclude with a candlelight vigil to honor and memorialize of loved ones.

"We do the walk-a-thon each year to raise money for Survivor Resources, but it's also a fun, community-based activity to bring awareness about who we are and what Survivor Resources can do for those dealing with the emotional loss of a friend or family member," says Margaret McAbee, the program's director. "The support of volunteers and donations are essential to maintain this invaluable resource and ensures that we can continue providing service to the grieving individuals who are suffering from the untimely death of a friend or relative."

Participants will be asked to pay a registration fee of $40 and to pursue as many pledges as possible to help meet Survivor Resource's goal of raising $65,000. Last year's walk-a-thon generated more than $40,000 which allowed Survivor Resources to maintain its services. The registration fee includes access to the entertainment, dinner and the walk-a-thon.

    About Survivor Resources
Survivor Resources is a private, non-profit organization committed to providing immediate and long-term emotional support and practical help for the loved ones of those who have died by homicide, suicide or accident.

Survivor Resources is an advocate for grieving friends and family while offering crisis support services. These support services include immediate needs such as help with media interaction and assistance with telling children about the recent death. Beyond initial needs, the organization is present for the education, spiritual support and grief counseling of those affected by an unexpected death.

Survivor Resources exemplified its commitment to its services during the I-35 Bridge collapse in August of 2007. Survivor Resource's staff responded immediately by connecting survivors and others affected with a support group shortly after the collapse.

The organization offers essential community services and can also serve as a liaison between police departments, county attorney's offices and grieving families. Its intentions are to reduce community anger and to focus on exuding grief in a positive, healing manner.
