  • (1888PressRelease) October 05, 2011 - Strowd Roses, a nonprofit foundation that supports projects in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area, will be hosting a ceremony to celebrate a decade of community support. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, October 9 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Gene Strowd Rose Garden located in the Community Center Park at 120 S. Estes Road, Chapel Hill, N.C.

"During the past 10 years, Strowd Roses has provided almost $4 million to fund 516 grants to 220 different organizations throughout the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area," said Jennifer Boger, Strowd Roses Board President. "It's wonderful to take an afternoon to celebrate all that these organizations have done for the Chapel Hill and Carrboro community during this period, and all that they will continue to do in the future."

In honor of the support the Strowd Roses foundation has provided the area, Chapel Hill and Carrboro will proclaim October 9th as Strowd Roses Day. Local dignitaries will be present as well as prominent community figures. Also attending will be past recipients of Strowd Roses grants including Suki Newton, president of Chapel Hill - Carrboro Public School Foundation as well as Margaret Gifford, founder and executive director of Farmer Foodshare. Music will be provided from the Mallarme Youth Chamber Orchestra and light refreshments from area restaurants will be served.

"Strowd Roses strives to help the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area flourish. One of the best ways to achieve that is by investing back into the community," said Boger. "It's wonderful to be able to support initiatives that strive to improve our community through programs involving education, the environment, the arts, music, sports or helping to provide basic needs such as shelter, food and health care."

Strowd Roses has helped support several hundred non-profit organizations and community initiatives with large and small grants. Some of the organizations are community-based such as The ArtsCenter. Other projects are affiliated with national organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity and the Ronald McDonald House. This year's ceremony will honor past recipients of the Strowd Roses foundation.
