  • (1888PressRelease) August 16, 2011 - Abu Dhabi, UAE: Decontamination as a science is constantly developing as the focus globally on hospital acquired infections, and the litigious implications, become ever more prominent. The result has seen a significant shift in positioning of a medical facility's CSSD (Central Sterile Service Department) and the only way for hospitals across the Middle East to achieve this is by following recommended international, national and regional regulations and standards.

According to Peter Newson, Director, Valisafe, Bishop's Stortford, UK, "These standards include the technical specifications of the equipment and, just as importantly, guidance on every step of the decontamination process. There are also standards written specifically for end users - with the ever increasing complexity of the instruments being used it is critical that the steps required to ensure that these are effectively reprocessed are universally understood and implemented - particularly in the Middle East where medical staff is comprised of medical professionals from all over the world."

Every medical facility that is reprocessing re-usable instruments needs to ensure the equipment they are using, the practices and protocols they are implementing, and the validation and testing of those processes all ensure that the instruments being processed consistently meet expected outcomes - in other words are clean and effectively sterilised.

Mr Newson will be speaking at the 6th Middle East CSSD Decontamination & Sterilisation Conference which will run as part the Abu Dhabi Medical Congress (ADMC), from 23-25 October, 2011, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). Organised by Informa Exhibitions, the CSSD Decontamination & Sterilisation Conference will meet the growing challenges faced by personnel working in CSSD departments in the Middle East region by presenting the latest innovations in the extremely dynamic area of hospital hygiene disinfection.

"With regards to the quality of the CSSD's in the Middle East, as everywhere in the world, the standard will vary," says Wim Renders, President, World Forum for Hospital Sterile Supply (WFHSS), Belgium, who will also be speaking at the Conference. "But it is of the utmost importance that all departments produce at least a basic quality because it is a basic patient right to be treated with a medical device of good quality. In this regard national sterilisation associations are important as they are the ideal carriers of knowledge to the departments."

According to Mr Renders, it is only the authorities, both locally and internationally, that are in the position to impose the directives, norms and guidelines related to effective sterilisation of medical equipment, and equally important, also to control their implementation. "For real progress, an intense interaction between the authorities and national associations is required in combination with the continuous efforts of the CSSD's," said Mr Renders.

As well as the comprehensive, CME accredited conference programme across four sectors - Primary Healthcare, Emergency, Rehabilitation as well as Patient Safety - ADMC will occupy 6,000sqm of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and will attract over 150 companies to exhibit over the three-day event.
