Leonard is a Miami, Florida native, but grew up in Mercer County, NJ. He was a multi-sport athlete at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School in Princeton Junction, NJ competing in football, basketball, and track. After lettering in three sports, Leonard earned an academic and football scholarship to Howard University. While at Howard, Leonard earned MEAC All-Academic Awards and 2nd Team All-Conference honors. After graduating from Howard, Leonard was signed as a priority free agent to the San Diego Chargers in May 2000. After minor injuries during the 2000 and 2001 seasons, Leonard made his NFL debut in 2002 with the Washington Football Team. From 2002-2008, Stephens played for the Detroit Lions, the Seattle Seahawks and the Tennessee Titans.

After retiring from the NFL in 2008, Leonard dove head first into youth sports. First, he started Perfect Performance as a youth sports institute dedicated to developing elite athletes and preparing them for the next level. He also started coaching High School football. He spent six years at Gonzaga College High School from 2009-2014 coaching Tight Ends and Special Teams. During his tenure at Gonzaga, Leonard coached two players that went on to play college football at the tight end position. After leaving Gonzaga, Leonard consulted with St John's College High School and coached at Bishop Dennis J O’Connell High School. In the summer of 2020, Leonard resumed youth football coaching with South County Athletic Association as Perfect Performance is their partner for player and coach development.

Since 2006, Leonard has focused on training and developing athletes apart of the Perfect Performance family. He is fortunate to have worked with players across all sports and all levels throughout the journey.

Coaching Philosophy: Leonard’s coaching philosophy has its foundation in preparation, discipline, and pushing past perceived limits. Leonard believes that the more preparation that is done on practice field, the easier the actual game is to play. He believes that sports teach athletes a level of discipline and sacrifice that is life applicable. Lastly, he believes that as athletes will themselves past their perceived mental and physical limits, they become acclimated to that environment and are not shaken when the “game” takes them there.
