  • Hanford-Corcoran, CA (1888PressRelease) May 22, 2012 - Sober College, a drug rehab center for young adults, has announced that its Community OutREach (CORE) Program is showing good response in the treatment of young adults with substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders. The program has been an integral part of Sober College's treatment model for more than a year now.

The CORE program was developed by the current director, Shane Coyle, who joined the organization in December 2009. Shane incorporated community outreach activities in the Sober Collage Treatment Model to add another therapeutic element to the residents' recovery process. Shane believes that volunteering with different organizations can help shape young adults' future by developing life skills, building self-esteem, and enhancing emotional awareness.

The program includes a series of volunteer services, both on-site at Sober College and off-site with different organizations. During the program, participants take part in different social activities, such as rescuing dogs at the Pet Adoption Fund, feeding the hungry at the Union Rescue Mission, and so on. According to Robert Pfeifer, the founder of Sober College, "Anytime we can take traditional treatment related activities, like service commitments, and combine that with an opportunity to gain credits … that is what we are all about."

Sober College's drug treatment model focuses on achieving five core competencies, sobriety, clinical, life skills, productivity and fitness. They implement an attraction-based treatment model, which helps young adults to remain sober, while still living life the fun way. Their treatment team consists of psychiatrists, therapists, drug and alcohol counselors, academic director, staffs, and house managers.

The Community OutREach Program helps drug addicts in the first stage of treatment, which is often the most difficult one to pull through. Talking about the benefits of joining the program, one of the residents said, "Helping others helped me get out of my own head."

About Sober College: Founded by Mindi Levins-Pfeifer in 2005, Sober College is a drug rehab center that specializes in dual-diagnosis and addiction treatment for young adults, incorporating both traditional and nontraditional therapies. Later, they partnered with Woodbury University, a small private university located in Burbank, California. They offer on-site college accredited courses.
