  • Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill, NC-SC (1888PressRelease) June 07, 2017 - SmartSky Networks, LLC, an aviation communications provider launching America's first airborne 4G LTE network, is announcing a new partnership with Canada-based DragonWave Inc. (DRWI) to implement product supply and installation services. DragonWave is the leading provider of high-capacity packet microwave solutions driving next-generation IP networks.

SmartSky will be utilizing DragonWave's Harmony Enhanced and Harmony EnhancedMC solutions to deliver high-capacity backhaul for SmartSky's air-to-ground 4G LTE network. Harmony EnhancedMC is a high-capacity packet microwave that builds upon the Harmony Enhanced family by delivering a multi-carrier channel system, doubling the capacity in a single ODU. Harmony EnhancedMC is ideal for the long-path lengths in the SmartSky network due to its high-system gain.

The partnership is announced on the heels of SmartSky's $170 million Series B financing, completing the equity funding for the distribution of its nationwide network. To date, SmartSky has raised roughly a quarter of a billion dollars in equity capital.

"The DragonWave Harmony EnhancedMC product solution offers our desired capacity requirements for SmartSky," said Vice President of Services and Architecture Dave Claassen of SmartSky. "Harmony EnhancedMC delivers simple installation, operation and sophisticated remote management, so we are thrilled to partner with them."

The SmartSky Network has begun deploying the nation's first airborne 4G LTE-based air-to-ground (ATG) network. The formal nationwide service launch is expected spring 2018 and will serve both business and commercial aviation. SmartSky's patented beamforming technology will provide more than 10 times the typical speed and capacity of the current industry standard ATG network by using 60 MHz of spectrum.

"SmartSky's innovative high-capacity and low-latency inflight network made this an easy partnership to forge," said DragonWave President and CEO Peter Allen. "The Harmony EnhancedMC achieves the highest degree of spectral efficiency, delivering more capacity per channel with a longer reach than any other all-outdoor microwave system."
