  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) August 30, 2012 - On August 30, Sleep with a Purpose (SWAP) will conduct an official "bed drop," donating one bed for every bed sold in their Connecticut launch to organizations that help alleviate homelessness by delivering 15 beds to the U.S. VETS in Inglewood, Calif., which assists in the successful transition of military veterans and their families through the provision of housing, counseling, career development and comprehensive support. This bed drop is possible due to sales of SWAP mattresses made during the company's launch at 15 1800-Mattress in Connecticut. On August 22, SWAP will also donate 40 beds to supportive housing WORKS in Connecticut (a partner of the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County) and Alpha Community Services YMCA, a branch of the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA.

The SWAP beds will be given to veterans preparing to live independently in the community and transitioning in to permanent housing, through services provided by the U.S. VETS. According to a report published by the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) from 2009-2011, chronic homelessness in the United States decreased by 3 percent, and linked the decrease with an increase in the availability of supportive housing beds.

"We're grateful and proud to be able to supply beds to the veterans who have fought and sacrificed so much for our country. Through the good work of the U.S. VETS, they can transition back in to their communities and live healthy, productive lives," says Josh Helland, who founded SWAP earlier this year, creating the world's first for-profit social impact mattress company created to help alleviate homelessness and support low-income housing initiatives. Built on the same successful "one-for-one" business model as TOMS shoes, SWAP works with manufacturers to create high-quality mattresses to be sold at some of the largest retail locations in the United States. The SWAP team strives to make this world a "bedder" place by giving individuals the opportunity they need to change their lives, ultimately enabling them to begin to make a difference in the lives of others.
