SGS summarizes the European Commission’s current thinking on microplastics in products

  • (1888PressRelease) October 27, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 137.23 to keep stakeholders informed about the European Commission’s latest thinking on microplastics in products.

    Synthetic polymer microparticles (microplastics) have been restricted in the EU under Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, which was published in September 2023. It applies to microplastics on their own and when intentionally added to mixtures.

    In reference to glitter, the European Commission (EC) has published on its website the currenting thinking on the application of the microplastics to plastic glitter on its own and in products.

    SGS has published SafeGuard 137.23 to help stakeholders understand this latest thinking. It includes a detailed summary of the EC’s thinking along with information on the possible publishing date for a Q&A document that will help stakeholders implement the new requirements.

    The new law is being implemented in phases from October 17, 2023.
