  • (1888PressRelease) May 15, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 062.24 to keep stakeholders informed about the state of Maine’s new prohibition on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in nine types of food packaging.

In August 2023, the state’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) proposed a prohibition on nine types of food packaging if they contained intentionally added PFAS. These food packaging products are made from paper, paperboard and other materials derived from plant fibers:
    • Bags and sleeves
    • Bowls
    • Closed containers
    • Flat service ware
    • Food boats
    • Open-top containers
    • Pizza boxes
    • Plates
    • Wraps and liners

That proposal, following one update and two comment periods, was signed into law by the state governor on March 25, 2024, establishing, with immediate effect, a new section under ‘Chapter 80: Reduction of Toxics in Packaging.’

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that may impact their ability to operate. SafeGuardS 062.24 summarizes the prohibition on PFAS in the nine types of food packaging and includes details of the background to the regulatory change, exemptions and further details on other restrictions in Chapter 80.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 062.24 for more information.
